Supporters who kept urging her and those who got "depressed" when she initially did not file her candidacy for a national position were the reason why vice presidential aspirant Sara Duterte-Carpio eventually decided to seek the second highest position in the country in the upcoming 2022 elections.
During her meet-and-greet with UniTeam alliance and Lakas-CMD members in San Pablo, Laguna on Friday, Duterte-Carpio explained why she backed out from her mayoral bid in her hometown Davao City and decided to run for the national arena instead.
"Nagkamali po ako sa pag estimate sa mga tao. Akala ko pag sinabi kong 'di na ako tatakbo, titigil na sila (I was wrong in estimating the people's sentiments. I thought they would stop from urgin me once I announced that I would not run for a national position)," she said.
"Hindi sila tumigil. Doon ako nagkaproblema, dahil mukhang na-ignite pa lalo yung passion nila na tumuloy tuloy sa panawagan nila (They did not. That's when my problem started because it seemed their passion to urge me was even ignited)," she added.
According to Duterte-Carpio, her supporters did not stop from holding caravans, prayer vigils and outreach programs to the people in a bid to urge her from gunning for a national position.
She said that "everyday," her supporters would bug her about her initial decision.
"'Yung araw araw na sinasabihan ako ng mga supporters na, 'iniwanan mo naman kami. Na-depression ako. Hindi na namin alam kung saan kami papunta dahil nakatutok kami sa pagtakbo mo,' (Everyday, my supporters would tell me, 'you left us. I got depressed. We don't know where we're going anymore because we actually focused on your election bid)" Duterte-Carpio bared.
According to her, that was the reason why withdrew her candidacy to become a third-termer mayor in Davao City and filed for vice presidency.
"Doon po nagsimula yung aking problema, na nasabi ko na sa pamilya ko na mukhang di ko ata matalikuran yung mga tao (That's where my problem started. I told my family that I could not leave the people)," she added.
Duterte-Carpio's brother, Sebastian, who initially sought a vice mayoralty post, replaced her in the bid.
