NLEX, Alaska eye second win

NLEX and Alaska go for their second victory when they switch opponents Friday, Dec. 10 in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Road Warriors take on the NorthPort Batang Pier in the 3 p.m. opener before the Aces face the new-look San Miguel Beermen at 6 p.m.

NorthPort and SMB, on the other hand, are eager to bounce back and barge into the win column of the season-ending tournament.

Import KJ McDaniels led the way in NLEX’s impressive 114-102 win over SMB in the opener two days earlier with 27 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Alaska had to weather a late rally by NorthPort to claim an 87-85 victory to begin the reinforced conference.

Former NLEX reinforcement Olu Ashaolu, Jeron Teng and Robbie Herndon were impressive in the victory which could help Alaska’s bid to improve on its dismal 3-8 record in the Philippine Cup.

Ashaolu’s 20 points, 14 rebounds and three assists gave coach Jeffrey Cariaso a good reason to believe that the Nigerian-Canadian is a good fit for the squad.

As both teams shoot for the early lead, the new players of NorthPort and SMB hope to atone for falling short in their debut appearances.

Arwind Santos dropped 23 points with seven rebounds and four blocks and sparked a Batang Pier comeback by nailing three triples from the right side.

Vic Manuel, who SMB acquired in exchange for Santos, turned in 17 points and seven boards which was not enough to help his new team drop its opening assignment.
