On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Louis Vuitton, the man behind the eponymous house, the women’s spring/summer 2022, as reimagined in Shanghai, celebrates timeless design and a continued historical relationship between Louis Vuitton and China

On the heels of the Paris Fashion Week show in October, Louis Vuitton traveled to the Shipyard Repair Docks on the Huangpu river in Shanghai, a waterway symbolic of the city’s rich history of voyage and trade, and a nod to Louis Vuitton’s own.

Under the heady glow of chandeliers, guests were invited to le grand bal of time. Inspired by his creative participation in the upcoming series remake of the 1996 film Irma Vep, Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of women’s collections, reimagined for Shanghai an act 2 to the Paris show.

The scene was that of an opulent ball. The result was a collection of a distinctly couture nature, where ceremony, intrigue, desire, and protocol were brought to life. Yet the notions of timelessness and transmission remain key to the maison. Nineteenth-century beading gave way to ‘90s-inspired denim and corsets were worn alongside bombers. In addition to 43 looks direct from the Paris runway, 19 more were designed exclusively for the Shanghai Spin-Off, four of which displayed the Louis Vuitton’s iconic gold chain and leather strap “Scarf Print.”  This motif is also featured on the Loop bag, one of the three exclusive bags created for the spin off. A Dauphine and a Petite Malle, both in laser cut leather, completed the trio.

On the year of the 200th anniversary of Louis Vuitton himself, the women’s spring/summer 2022 Spin-Off show in Shanghai was a celebration of timeless design and of a continued historical relationship between Louis Vuitton and China, extending well beyond the 30 years of physical presence in the country.
