Marikina City's COVID-19 cases declining; now below 50

As a result of Marikina City’s aggressive inoculation drive, less than 50 active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were recorded in the city as of Wednesday, Dec. 1.

A total of 48 cases were detected in Marikina, with Barangay Sto. Nino logging the highest concentration of seven cases.

Marikina City has already achieved herd immunity as 425,000 of its residents have been fully vaccinated out of its total population of 488,000, according to Mayor Marcy Teodoro on Monday, Nov. 29.

This means 87 percent of the city’s population had been fully vaccinated, exceeding the Department of Health’s target of 70 percent for herd immunity.

Marikina also participated in the national “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” campaign which set a target of three million per day during its three day duration from Monday, Nov. 29, to Wednesday, Dec. 1.

The city received 30,000 vaccine doses from the national government to facilitate the “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” campaign and set a target of at least 10,000 doses deployed per day.

From Wednesday, Dec. 15 to Friday, Dec. 17, Marikina will also be participating in the second round of the nationwide vaccination campaign which will primarily focus on second dose administration and booster shots.

Aside from its participation in the national campaign, Marikina also began offering booster shots to medical frontliners (A1), senior citizens (A2), and persons with comorbidities (A3) on Saturday, Nov. 27, and is open to administering first dose vaccinations to non-residents.
