Robredo backs proposed Panay-Guimaras-Negros bridges

ILOILO CITY — If she wins the presidency, Vice President Leni Robredo will push for the construction of the trans-link bridges connecting Panay, Guimaras and Negros Islands in the Visayas.

“This would be life-changing. This project is something that everyone should look forward to and support,” said Robredo. She was in the city and province of Iloilo last December 3 and 4.

“I’ve always been consistent with my stand that infrastructure can spur rural development and that should really be supported,” Robredo emphasized.

The vice president The trans-link bridges have been in the drawing board for almost 50 years, but has never materialized.

The proposed trans-link bridges were included in the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program, but the Chinese government reportedly withdrew its offer to finance the construction.

Robredo disclosed she spoke to Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon, who was instrumental in pushing for the first phase with a bridge linking Iloilo to the small island province of Guimaras.

Citing Drilon, Robredo said the new timetable for the trans-link bridges might be in 2028.

“We will wholeheartedly support this project because we know how advantageous it would be to the people of Guimaras, Negros and Panay Island,” Robredo added.
