Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Vice Presidential bet Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio want to grant more powers to the National Privacy Commission (NPC) so that it can protect the public from data breaches.
According to the tandem, many of our countrymen have fallen victim to fake text messages by unscrupulous individuals who are using the Internet to scam the unsuspecting public.
"Sumasabay sa nagbabagong panahon ang mga mapagsamantala. Dati ay mga fake raffles, fake loads, at fake deliveries na basta na lang dumadating kahit wala kang inorder. Ngayon pati pekeng trabaho. Dapat ay makasabay din ang sistema ng bansa at magkaroon ng kakayahan na maagapan ang mga ganitong sitwasyon (Opportunists are going along with the times. Before they were using fake raffles, fake loads, and fake deliveries that come without making an order. But now we even have fake jobs. The system of the country must be able to go along as well and have the ability to prevent such situations)," the Bongbong-Sara UniTeam said.
They added that millions of Filipinos have been fooled by these illegal schemes due to data breaches and hacking. The duo also noted that the personal data of every Filipino is being used not only in communication but also in digital banking, registration in different government portals, and online transactions.
The UniTeam also believes that giving additional power to the NPC will allow it to expose and sanction institutions or groups who fail to put security features in their system.
They added that other government agencies should learn from these scams and improve their knowledge of new technology to avoid data breaches.
A substitute bill amending the Data Privacy Act of 2012 and seeking to enhance NPC's capability to cope with the country's digital transformation has already been approved by the House of Representatives.
The amended law will give the NPC the power to enforce administrative sanctions such as monetary penalty, summon, or subpoena any individual to attend any investigation and proceedings before the commission to expedite any case brought to them.
