Severino slips from share of lead in world para chess tilt

FIDE Master Sander Severino fell from a share of the lead after splitting the point with Russian Maksin Ermakov in the fourth round of the World Chess Championship for People with Disabilities held online Monday.

Severino agreed to a draw after 49 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined to slightly improve to 3.5 points one three wins and one draw.

The fifth-seeded multiple Asian Para Games gold medalist joined the crowded list for seventh to 22nd place that include Ermakov, who also notched his first draw after three straight victories.

Six players including fourth seed FM Stanislav Babarykin of Russia remained unscathed on top with 4 points.

Meanwhile, Jasper Rom absorbed his first loss after three consecutive wins at the expense of Argentina’s Leonel Amato.

Rom, who lost after 33 moves of a French duel, skidded to joint 23rd along with Henry Lopez and Darry Bernardo with identical 3 points.

Lopez bested Argentina’s Juan Carlos Montenegro in 39 moves of a King’s Gambit Declined while Bernardo edged France’s Marie Moulin after 33 moves of a Slav game.

Not so fortunate was Rodolfo Sarmiento, who absorbed his second straight defeat at the expense of India’s Ashutosh Singh after 45 moves of a Reti Opening.

Sarmiento currently totes 2 points on two wins and two defeats for joint 91st.
