Pacquiao: NTF must improve sluggish vaccination performance in Bangsamoro region
Presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday, Nov. 9 scored the slow rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), saying the National Task Force should inoculate more people in the region.
Pacquiao noted the region has the lowest vaccination rate and has been left behind in the government’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout. Compared to other regions that have already breached the 20 percent vaccination rate, he said BARMM is still lagging behind with 10.06 percent—the lowest nationwide.
“May mga sinasabi na marami raw sa mga taga BARMM ang ayaw magpabakuna (Some are saying that many people in the BARMM do now want to get vaccinated) but even if this is true, it is no excuse for the government to put them at the back of the line,” Pacquiao said.
“Sa halip na pabayaan at iwanan na lamang sila, mas maganda na maipaliwanag sa kanila na ang bakuna ay hindi para lamang sa ikabubuti ng kanilang pamilya kundi maging ng kanilang buong komunidad (Instead of leaving them alone, it would be best to explain to them that getting vaccinated would not only be for their and their family’s benefit but also to the whole community),” the senator added.
Pacquiao further said it is now the time for the government to pay attention to areas with greater potential to be fully COVID-free since there is a marked decrease in the number of positive cases in areas previoulsy marked as hotspots.
“Huwag naman sana nating pabayaan yung mga kapatid nating mga Muslim at maging ang mga Kristiyano sa BARMM. Tinatamaan din naman ng Covid ang mga nasa BARMM (Let’s not neglect our brothers and sisters who are Muslims or the Christians in BARMM. Those in BARMM are also vulnerable to the disease). Ten percent vaccination for an entire region is really too low ” Pacquiao said.
“Besides, vaccinating areas like BARMM could allow us to secure pockets of victories in the fight of Covid. It is easier to keep areas like BARMM Covid-free especially if the people are vaccinated,” the lawmaker stressed.
