Namfrel begins series of TikTok videos on VCMs for 2022 polls

The National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) started on Tuesday, November 9 the posting of what will eventually become a series of TikTok videos on Vote Counting Machines (VCMs) which will be used in the May 2022 elections.

"Today we start a new series on TikTok on the Vote Counting Machines (VCMs) for the 2022 automated elections," Namfrel said in their Facebook post.

In the video, Namfrel explained that the VCMs are the ones used in clustered precincts to transmit the results and turnout of votes to the different canvassing centers in the cities or municipalities.

Automated elections will push on next year as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) believes there is no more time for a hybrid election system.

Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon has said before that teachers will also be at the losing end as they may get shot at, receive threats, or infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The country is set to use the old VCMs from Smartmatic in the May 2022 polls as well as the lease of 10,000 additional units.

During the 2016 polls, the Comelec opted to lease more than 97,000 VCMs from Smartmatic due to lack of time to refurbish the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines.
