Taguig's Cayetano supports lifting of face shield mandate

Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano is backing the proposal for the lifting of the mandatory use of face shields.

Cayetano held a meeting with the Taguig Safe City Task Force Monday for the city’s move recommending lifting of the face shield mandate to the Inter-Agency Task Force.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Benhur Abalos said Monday that the official position of Metro Manila mayors, which include Cayetano, is to scrap the use of face shields except in hospitals, health centers and public transport vehicles.

The Metro Manila mayor’s position will be forwarded to the IATF, which will study the proposal and make a decision.

Abalos said Metro Manila mayors support the position of DILG Sec. Eduardo Año to scrap the wearing of face shields except in hospitals.

Last September, President Rodrigo Duterte decided to do away with face shields except in situations and places under 3Cs -- closed, crowded and close contact.

The Taguig City government is also coordinating with barangays to allow the conduct of group sports activities such as Zumba, and is aligning with other Metro Manila cities in coming up with guidelines for contact sports.

Last Dec. 22, the Taguig Safe City Task Force issued Bulletin No. 5 reminding the public on the mandatory wearing of “full-coverage face shields together with face masks, earloop masks, indigenous,reusable, or do-it-yourself masks, or other facial protective equipment that cover the nose and mouth at all times.”

“A proper face shield must be clear and require full coverage from eyes to chin including the sides,” it said.

As of Nov. 7, Taguig has 239 active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases out of 51,406 confirmed cases, 50,757 recoveries and 410 deaths. The city government has fully vaccinated 617,509 individuals.
