PH Red Cross in Visayas, Mindanao on standby amid red tide alert
By Dhel Nazario
Philippine Red Cross (PRC) chapters in Visayas and Mindanao regions are on watch after a recent bulletin released by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) warned that some bodies of water in eight provinces are still positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide, the PRC said on Sunday, November 7.

The PRC said that this was done after the posting of BFAR Shellfish Bulletin No. 29 dated November 5, 2021 where it said that bodies of water in eight provinces namely Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol; Villareal, Cambatutay, and San Pedro Bays in Western Samar; Carigara Bay and coastal waters of Leyte in Leyte; Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; and Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur remain positive for PSP.
BFAR also added that coastal waters of Daram Island, Maqueda, and Irong-Irong Bays in Western Samar; Cancabato Bay, Tacloban City in Leyte; and coastal waters of Biliran Island are now positive for the red tide toxin.
PRC said that Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon has directed all Chapters within the affected area to be on alert and ready to respond to possible poisoning emergencies.
This includes Bohol Chapter, Western Samar Chapter, Leyte Chapter, Eastern Samar Chapter, Zamboanga del Sur Chapter, Surigao Chapter.
The BFAR bulletin warns that all types of shellfish and acetes or "alamang" gathered from the affected areas are "not safe" for human consumption.
"Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking," BFAR advised.
"Kahit wala pang nangyayari, inihahanda na ng Red Cross Chapters natin sa Visayas at Mindanao ang mga first aiders at ambulances natin kung sakali may mabiktima ng shellfish poisoning. Ganyan tayo sa Red Cross, paparating pa lang ang sakuna, nakahanda na tayo (Even though there are no incidents yet, Red Cross Chapters in Visayas and Mindanao are already preparing their first-aiders and ambulances in case there will be cases. That's how we are in Red Cross, before disasters strike, we're already prepared)," Gordon said
