Metro Manila's COVID indicators now 'better' than a year ago -- OCTA

Nearly all the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) indicators in Metro Manila are looking "better now" than it was at this time last year, said OCTA research fellow Dr. Guido David.

In a Twitter post on Monday, Nov. 8, David compared Metro Manila's COVID-19 numbers during the period Nov. 1-7, 2021 versus the numbers on Nov. 1-7, 2020.

Metro Manila currently averages 405 new cases per day, which is lower than the 501 cases during the same period last year.

The COVID-19 reproduction number or infection rate is now at 0.37 as against the 0.78 last year.

OCTA also observed a lower average daily attack rate or incidence rate (2.86 cases per 100,000 in 2021 versus 3.63 cases per 100,000 in 2020); active cases (6,484 cases in 2021 versus 10,722 cases in 2020); and positivity rate (4 percent in 2021 versus 6 percent in 2020).

David, likewise, noted that Metro Manila is doing better in terms of the number of tests being conducted at present, which is higher by 38 percent.

He said that the lower COVID-19 cases can be attributed to the vaccine rollout this year.

However, the number of occupied hospital beds and ICU beds at present is still higher than it was a year ago (2,389 beds in 2021 versus 2,290 beds in 2020; 524 beds in 2021 versus 322 beds in 2020, respectively).
