Pinoys start hot in world para chess championships

Four Filipinos clinched first-round victories Friday at the start of the 4th World Championships for People with Disabilities held online.

FIDE Master Sander Severino, Jasper Rom, Darry Bernardo and Rodolfo Sarmiento downed their opponents in the nine-round tournament participated by 249 players from 44 countries.

Severino, seeded fifth in the event, bested Ukraine’s Svitlana Solomna in 47 moves of a Nimzo-Indian Defense Defense while Rom downed Poland’s Malwina Szewczyk in 47 moves of a Queen’s Pawn Opening.

Bernardo outplayed India’s Babuk Yesu in 52 moves of a French Opening, while Sarmiento also won over Almas Shaimov of Kazakhstan in 50 moves of a French duel.

Henry Lopez, the country’s fifth entry, drew his match over Leri Talikadze of Georgia after 46 moves of a Benoni.

“Maahaba pa ang tournament. Sana ma-sustain,” said Severino, a multiple gold medalist in the Asian Para Games.
