First nuclear magnetic resonance lab in Visayas to open mid-December 2022, says DOST chief
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced Friday, Nov. 5, that the Visayas’ first Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Laboratory will open its doors to the public by mid-December 2022.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the agency funded the establishment of the NMR Laboratory “in an effort to capacitate our Tuklas Lunas Development Centers from Visayas and Mindanao."
The 18 month-long project is implemented by the University of San Agustin which is one of the institutions actively involved in the DOST’s Tuklas Lunas Program.
“It aims to establish the first nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory in the Visayas, build the competency in NMR spectroscopy of researchers in Visayas and Mindanao, and provide walk up, remote operation, and data acquisition access to the NMR spectrometer,” de la Peña said during his weekly report on Friday, Nov. 5.
“The proposed infrastructure and training shall equip the countryside human resources to become leaders in drug discovery to bring globally competitive products that benefit Filipinos.”
The project is led by Dr. Doralyn Dalisay of the University of San Agustin. It started on June 15, 2021 and is expected to be completed on Dec. 14, 2022.
"The project has started writing training module for users and renovation of the facility. The NRM spectrometer is expected to arrive in February 2022 and is expected to be operational by the month of April 2022,” de la Peña said.
The program is expected to benefit Filipino scientists and researchers, as it assists them in producing high quality and cost-effective natural products for eventual development as medicines that will benefit the Filipinos.
