Visual artist Michael Toms Semana passes away

The contemporary artist captured the attention of the art scene with his revolutionary resin-based visual art

Filipino artists mourned the loss of a brother and friend early this November as visual artist Michael Toms Semana succumbed to a heart attack.

Michael, widely known as Mischa in the creative field, was exposed to the arts early on in his life. Born to a family that specializes in crafting religious images in Batangas, he became known for being an innovative artist thanks to his unique technique of using resin backings for his acrylic paintings. This helped him create abstract works of art that were filled with energy, dimension, and life with the pigments he splattered on his canvas.

Among his notable showcase was “Resindipity,” his first solo exhibit that presented his mastery of resin and painterly skills reminiscent of the works of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock. His “Letters From Earth” showcased his vision of the cosmos through soft, muted palettes to depict nebula-like compositions. These works eventually earned him accolades to decorate his artistic life. He was named a two-time semi-finalist by the Metrobank Arts and Design Excellence Awards and got honorable mentions at the GSIS Art Competition, according to Kunst Art Filipino.

Currently, his fellow artists and friends are doing “Our heART for MISCHA,” an art for a cause project that will benefit the bereaved family.
