K-pop group ENHYPEN’s Heeseung undergoes surgery to remove cyst

K-pop boy band ENHYPEN member Heeseung underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his toe, his agency said.

“While taking part in activities for ENHYPEN’s 1st studio album, Heeseung experienced pain in one of his right toes and visited a hospital for examination, and was diagnosed with an epidermoid cyst,” said Belift Lab.

It added, “Following physician advice for timely treatment, Heeseung underwent surgery on Monday, November 1 immediately after the conclusion of album promotions. Heeseung is currently resting as doctors recommended a week of rest and recuperation.”

What is epidermoid cyst?

According to the Mayo Clinic website, epidermoid cysts, or epidermal cysts, “are noncancerous small bumps beneath the skin. They can appear anywhere on the skin, but are most common on the face, neck and trunk.”

“Epidermoid cysts are slow growing and often painless, so they rarely cause problems or need treatment. You might choose to have a cyst removed by a doctor if its appearance bothers you or if it's painful, ruptured or infected,” it added.

On the cause of epidermal cyst, Mayo Clinic stated, “The surface of your skin (epidermis) is made up of a thin, protective layer of cells that your body continuously sheds. Most epidermoid cysts form when these cells move deeper into your skin and multiply rather than slough off. Sometimes the cysts form due to irritation or injury of the skin or the most superficial portion of a hair follicle.”

One way to treat epidermoid cyst is undergoing minor surgery in which a doctor removes the entire cyst.

“You may need to return to the doctor's office to have stitches removed. Minor surgery is safe and effective and usually prevents cysts from recurring. If your cyst is inflamed, your doctor may delay the surgery,” according to Mayo Clinic.

Belift Lab added that if Heeseung’s recovery takes longer, “we ask for your understanding that Heeseung may be participating in a limited capacity for some of the performances for the 2021 ENHYPEN fan meeting, scheduled for the 19th.”

“We will continue to monitor Heeseung’s recovery and determine his level of participation by taking into consideration physician advice and the artist’s condition, to make sure that he is not unduly strained,” the agency said.
