‘Music to move us forward from these darkest of times’
A powerful online musical made up of original songs by excellent Filipino musical artists, that is what M-FLIX promises to bring this month. Its virtual show, dubbed “M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas,” gathers the brightest names of the OPM landscape as they sing stories of our pandemic emotions.

Led by the Bonifacio Art Foundation Inc. (BAFI), the art and science foundation behind BGC Arts Center, The Mind Museum, the BGC Public Art Program, and Mind S-Cool, works together with the curators of its NCCA-cited flagship program, the Pinoy Playlist Music Festival (PPMF), to bring the show to life.
“We wanted to come up with a unique Pinoy musical form, given that we cannot stage musicals now, that would mainly acknowledge the emotions that we all felt during these times and capture them all as a way of expressing our continuing and deepest gratitude to our fellow Filipinos, most especially, our frontliners”, says Maria Isabel Garcia, managing director and curator of the Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc.
Garcia worked with the three other PPMF curators, namely National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, Moy Ortiz, and Noel Ferrer, to conceptualize and operationalize this special project. “M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas” mainly consists of 12 original songs and a medley of all 12 songs, with the songs connected by animated shorts in between.
The original songs are hooked on the following emotional “pillars”: gulat, takot, pagka-gipit, malikhaing pagtugon, pangamba, pagtuklas, malasakit, pananagutan, pag-alala, pasasalamat, pagbangon, and pagmumuni. Each recorded performance was edited to give rise to unique video formats, blended to produce a seamless musical offering by Stephen Viñas. The animations, created by Aidon Panlaqui, serve to introduce and graphically depict the theme of each song that follows it.
Aside from the three PPMF curators, also part of the “M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas” are songwriters Louie Ocampo, Ogie Alcasid, Joey Ayala, Davey Langit, Edith Gallardo, Krina Cayabyab Viñas, Jude Gitamondoc, and Fr. Manoling Francisco. The entr’acte will be a creative weaving of parts of all the songs into a musical quilt by Rony Fortich. Some of the renowned composers collaborated with creative lyricists namely Floy Quintos, Jose Javier Reyes, and Therese Marie Villarante.
“We wanted all original songs by Filipino composers/lyricists for ‘M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas’ because we who experienced the pandemic here in the Philippines have collective feelings and insights about it,” says Maestro Ryan Cayabyab. “We wanted to harvest all that as a way for music to move us forward from these darkest of times. My own compositions here came from those dark moments that still led me to create for example, ‘Tayong Mga Pilipino.’” The tracks resounding lyrics goes: “tayong mga Pilipino, tumitindig kahit kapos, sumusugod, lumulusob, hindi tayo patataob, nagmamahalan tayo, nagmamalasakit tayo, sa kapwa Pilipino!”
Proving to be a star-studded event, “M-FLIX” will feature performances by Joanna Ampil, Nicole Asensio, Joey Ayala, Mark Bautista, Bukas Palad Choir, Bituin Escalante, Klarisse de Guzman, Rony Fortich, The Itchyworms, Davey Langit, Jed Madela, Morisette, Tim Pavino, Pinopela, The Company, Basil Valdez, and Raki Vega.
“M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas” will be released in two acts. Act 1 will premiere on Nov. 6, 2021 and Act 2 will be on Nov, 13, 2021, both at 7 p..m., on MIND S-COOL YouTube Channel.
BAFI, with PPMF and co-presenter Sun Life Foundation, dedicate “M-FLIX 2021: Da Pinoy Pandemic Palabas” to all frontliners.
