Bong Go: Duterte considering Senate run in 2022

President Duterte is now considering running for the Senate in the upcoming May 2022 elections, vice presidential candidate and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go confirmed on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

“He is considering...pinag-aaralan niyang mabuti. Kung makakatulong ba sa bayan...he might. Kino-consider niya po yung pagtakbo (He is studying it carefully. If it can help the nation, he might. He is considering running for the Senate),” Go said in an interview.

According to Go, Duterte is considering a number of factors before deciding whether or not to run for the Senate.

The Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) vice presidential bet said the Chief Executive is willing to run if it would help administration candidates win.

“Siyempre tinitingnan din niya ‘yung slate ng administration ng PDP. Kung makakatulong siya na mas maraming mananalo sa part ng administration, iyon ang kino-consider (Of course, he is looking at the Senate slate of the administration of the PDP-Laban. If he can help win the administration’s Senate slate win, that is being considered),” said Go.

“And of course, ‘yung pagseserbisyo sa bayan bilang inyong Tatay Digong. Ito proven and tested na po ‘yung kanyang pagseserbisyo sa ating mga kababayan hindi lang sa salita kung ‘di sa gawa (Duterte’s pubic service. It is already proven and tested by our people, not only in words but also in action),” he added.

Go also said Duterte is more than qualified to run as a senator considering he would be a former president, as he was a former member of the House of Representatives and had been a mayor of Davao City.

Duterte is being urged by his political party mates in the PDP-Laban faction headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi to run as senator in the upcoming polls. Cusi said attempts are now being made to convince the president.

PDP-Laban’s standard bearer Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa also confirmed he is one of those seeking to convince the President to run for the Senate, and said he would even push for Duterte to become the next Senate President.

In an online interview, Dela Rosa said he is “very confident” Duterte would be able to get 13 or majority votes to become the next Senate leader.

“Malaki ang tsansa, kapag tumakbo siyang senador siguradong mananalo siya at pagka kasama siya dun sa Senate slate namin ng PDP-Laban, all the more na mag reinforce or lalong lalakas yung chance ng aming mga kasamahan, slate namin sa senado na mamananalo (There is a big chance, if he runs as a senator, that he will win and if he is running together with our Senate slate in the PDP-Laban, it will reinforce and strengthen the chances of our senatorial candidates to win) with him around during the campaign,” Dela Rosa said.

“We need at least 13 votes so meron na kaming pondo dun. Andyan ako, andun si Sen. (Francis) Tolentino, si Sen. (Cynthia) Villar, Sen. Bong Revilla. Andiyan ang ibang mga kasamahan namin and then dagdag pa nitong mga incoming (we already have people inside. I would be there, Senators Tolentino, Villar, and Bong Revilla would be there. We have our group in addition to the incoming group),” he added.

“I’m very confident, we will get the 13 votes for him to be the SP,” the PDP-Laban’s presidential bet reiterated.
