'Kamote' ice cream to help drive Baybay City's agri sector

TACLOBAN CITY — An ice cream made from sweet potato (camote) is now sold in Baybay City through the technology transferred by the Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center to the city government.

The sweet potato ice cream is currently available at the Women's Pasalubong Center, in Candadam, Baybay City.

With its increasing demand, an ice cream processing plant will soon be launched through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-8) Grant in Aid Program.

The first ice cream processing center of Baybay will use sweet potato as the main ingredient. It is produced by local farmers as part of the city’s intervention to promote its agriculture sector.

Its workers are mostly women who meet the products' expanding market with the easing up of quarantine restrictions due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The center currently produces 1,128 tubs per day at 100 grams per tub in various flavors such as cheesy macapuno, jackfruit, mint chocolate, double dutch, and coffee-choco swirl.
