Poland donates 500K AstraZeneca vaccines to PH

The government of Poland donated 547,100 doses of AstraZeneca coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine to the country on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 28.

The vaccines were transported onboard Emirates Airlines flight EK 332 around 4 p.m. at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

This marked the first time that Poland provided free COVID-19 vaccines to the country since the onset of the pandemic last year.

The delivery came a day before the government kicks off the "National Vaccination Days" against COVID-19 on Monday where at least nine million Filipinos are targeted to be inoculated.

Vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said in a virtual press briefing that the emergence of the new Omicron (B1.1.529) variant should prompt local government units to pursue a more aggressive strategy in their vaccination campaigns.

"Even against the Delta variant, vaccination is very effective in terms of protecting from hospitalization, severe cases, and death," he said.

With the delivery, the vaccine supply has further increased to 142,153,340 doses, of which 81,017,994 doses were administered as of Nov. 27 while around 61 million doses were in government’s stockpile.

A total of 45,286,049 individuals have received their first dose while 35,557,409 others have been fully vaccinated.

There were also 174,536 people that were given their booster shots.
