The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) has voted longtime executive director and secretary-general Ed Picson as its new president during Thursday’s online elections.

Outgoing president Ricky Vargas, who now assumes chairmanship, nominated Picson to continue their successful and fruitful campaigns particularly at the Tokyo Olympics last August where the country produced three medalists.

“I am honored to turn the baton over to Ed as my successor. He is the most qualified and deserving for the position,” Vargas said.

“Ed is a principled and honest man who believes in good governance, cares very much for our boxers and is hands on. I am confident he will bring ABAP to the next level.”

Picson accepted the position with gratitude, saying that he will do his best to keep the Olympic momentum going.

“I am humbled by the trust and confidence reposed in me. The results in the last Olympics will be a tough act to follow, but our boxers, coaches and support staff assure me they are all up to the task,” the veteran sportscaster said.

“We vow not to let the country down.”

The association produced three of the four Olympic medalists in Tokyo with Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam winning silver and Eumir Marcial pocketing the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, also elected unanimously were Deputy Speaker Robbie Puno as Vice President and former Congressman Raul Daza as Vice Chairman.

Picson said he will appoint the new secretary general and treasurer as per National Sports Association’s mandate in their first board meeting within a week.
