Refurbishment of VCMs almost done - Comelec

The refurbishment of the vote counting machines (VCMs) that will be used in the May 2022 polls is almost done.

On Thursday, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Spokesperson James Jimenez reported that they've alresdy refurbished 99.6 percent of the VCMs.

"That's 96,981 but we do have a number of them quarantined," he said in a press briefing in Manila.

Jimenez said those in quarantine or still ongoing repairs total 334 units or .3 percent.

"The refurbishment is almost done, only 334 left in quarantine that should be cleared very soon," he said.

During the 2016 polls, the Comelec opted to lease more than 97,000 VCMs from Smartmatic due to lack of time to refurbish the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines.

The Comelec has since purchased and used the VCMs in the May 2019 polls and again in the May 2022 elections.
