Petro Gazz whips Perlas, ends Champions League on high note

The Petro Gazz Angels ended their Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Champions League campaign on a high note after defeating the Tuguegarao Perlas Spikers, 25-11, 26-24, 19-25, 25-20, at the Aquamarine Recreational Center Thursday, Nov. 25.

The Angels were pushed to their limits as they held on in the fourth set with a late comeback rally from the Perlas Spikers.

Already in match point at 24-20, Ria Meneses put the finishing touches for the win with a soft tip as Petro Gazz made a graceful exit with a 3-2 record.

Meneses led the Angels with 19 points on top of 18 kills, Ces Molina fired 14 markers, while Gretchel Soltones and Jessey de Leon scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"Our mindset is to bounce back today. In our game last Wednesday, I have nothing to say and that's why we wanted to bounce back," said Meneses.

"I think their spikers are very good. They know how to place the ball. I did my best and made my points through attacks."

Leading 23-18 in the third canto, Tuguegarao put up a fight to take the set with back-to-back points coming from Nicole Tiamzon's drop and an attack error from Jessey De Leon.

Petro Gazz also faced a tough challenge in the extended second frame but the heroics of Myla Pablo, hammering a crosscourt kill and a solid block point against Michelle Morente, chalked up another set win for the Angels.

The Angels waxed hot early in the first set, unloading a 5-1 run capped by a Meneses open spike to extend the lead to 21-10 and pull away for good.

Heather Guino-o paced Perlas with 16 points while Morente and Tiamzon had 13 points apiece.

Meanwhile, the Chery Tiggo Crossovers, the 2021 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference champions, and the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers are battling for the PNVF Champions League title at press time.
