'Hellbound' tops Netflix's Global Rankings with over 43M watch hours

But is it better than ‘Squid Game’?

“Train to Busan,” “Peninsula,” and “The King of Pigs” director Yeon Sang-ho does it again with his recent Korean blockbuster “Hellbound” as the series lands the number one spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English List in 71 countries around the world.

Netflix’s newly launched “TOP 10” website unveils the lists of their most popular series and films on the platform weekly. The main basis of the ranking is the total number of viewing hours, updated every week on Wednesdays at 4 a.m. (Philippine Time). The list is separated into the following categories: English, non-English, Film, and TV.

If you haven’t seen the series, “Hellbound” is the epitome of dystopia envisioned by Yeon Sang-ho. It revolves around “supernatural events caused by otherworldly beings who appear out of nowhere to issue a decree to condemn individuals to hell,” according to the show’s primer.

With the director’s interpretation of the original webtoon called “Jiok” (which is Korean for “Hell”), the six-episode series tops the list of Netflix garnering 43.48 million hours in 2021. This performance is worth highlighting considering that it was first released on Nov. 19, 2021, and its six episodes compete against other shows reaching over 16 one-hour long episodes (similar to that of “Hometown Cha Cha Cha”).

This is just another victory for Netflix’s team in Korea after the well-received “Squid Game,” which also rocked the world by storm.
