The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) cited the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on Thursday, Nov. 25, for the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccination work it rendered to its personnel and persons deprived of liberty (PDL).
In his keynote speech at the opening of the 4th BJMP Community Relations Service Congress, Cabinet Secretary and IATF-EID co-chairperson Karlo Alexei B. Nograles commended the BJMP for all its initiatives to ensure the health protection of the personnel and inmates especially in the midst of the pandemic.
BJMP spokesperson Chief Inspector Xavier Solda in a viber message said that as of Nov. 24, 116,760 out of 125,082 PDLs were administered with the COVID-19 jabs.
He noted that the figure comprises 93.35 percent of the total number of PDLs in the 474 district, city and municipal BJMP-run jails across the country.
Citing the record, Nograles stressed that these numbers were achieved through everyone's efforts under BJMP Jail Director Allan Iral with the cooperation of the BJMP regional directors, local government units (LGUs) and the Department of Health (DOH).
“Maraming salamat (Thank you very much) for the inclusion of inmates in the vaccination activities,’’ Nograles said.
In these times referring to the pandemic, Nograles emphasized that the country’s COVID-19 the country’s “rebound and recovery plan’’ lies in the vaccination program and the public’s strict adherence to the minimum public health standards.
As of November 23, Nograles pointed out that the country has received more than 135.1 million vaccines with over 43.1 million Filipinos having received their first dose of vaccines while over 34. 2 million are already fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
For his part, Iral reaffirmed the BJMP’s commitment to ensure that all PDLs will be vaccinated as the country targets to achieve herd immunity this year.
“Wala pong maiiwanan. Lahat po ng mga qualified PDL ay tinitiyak po natin na mapapabakunahan (No one will be left behind. All qualified PDLs will surely be inoculated),’’ Iral assured.
Iral stressed that the PDL’s health is of prime importance citing that the vaccination process will be complemented by the bureau’s strict implementation of health protocols in the jail facilities.
Aside from the COVID-19 jabs, Iral noted that the “PDLs were also inoculated with flu and pneumococcal vaccines for further health protection.’’ (Chito A. Chavez)
