Oliver Tolentino continues to champion Filipino fashion with recent shows in LA

The Beverly Hills-based couturier presented new collections at LAFW and KFWLA

These days, when Hollywood celebrities are asked “who are they wearing?”, it is no longer a shock to hear a few names of Filipino designers. Among those who started guiding the attention to Filipino-made fashion for international red carpets is Oliver Tolentino. With his refined taste, a keen eye for details, and master skill in crafting elegant gowns and more, the Los Angeles-based fashion designer was able to dress Hollywood elites from Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher to “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood. Continuing his mission of putting Filipino fashion on the global map, he presented his latest collections in major fashion festivities in LA.

Closing the red carpet night, Oliver wowed the LA crowd with his 33-piece collection during the LA Fashion Week last October on the rooftop of the Peterson Auto Museum. Much like his fashion journey, the collection is a mixture of Filipino heritage and the glamor of Tinseltown. The Beverly Hills red carpet couturier from Bataan kicked off the show with his muse and former Supermodel of the World Philippines, Tutay Maristela, vamping solo on the runway in a bright red ball gown with a beaded bodice and thousands of hand-cut rosettes. Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados stepped out in a modern bright terno and surprised many with her L.A. runway debut.

Adding to his fashion display were beautiful sequined column gowns in pink hues, followed by outfits in gold and silver chain mail, including a silver gown one with layered peplum at the hip and a high slit. Blue dresses followed in sequins, beads, and hand-cut flowers, as well as side peplums and geometric layered strips. A dramatic finale was served by Gazini wearing a black fully-beaded bodice and shimmering red ball skirt and Tutay in a black multi-layered voluminous tulle skirt gown with hints of white horsehair underneath.

This November, Oliver went back to his roots and celebrated women and diversity with a collection shown at the Kornit Fashion Week in LA (KFWLA). For the inaugural fashion show of Kornit Digital, an Israeli-American manufacturing company that produces and markets industrial and commercial printers for the apparel and textile industries that minimize water use and toxic materials in dyes, he exhibited a new 30-piece line at the historical Pacific Stock Exchange building.

Sustainable fashion and Filipino dressing were alive on the runway with a dozen eco-couture piña outfits in a variety of hues and looks made with strips of fabric remnants, from dresses embellished with leftover lace and beadings to frocks with floral cut-outs from past production runs.

In addition to the sustainable element of the show, models were cast to celebrate all women, including women of all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicities, religions, and ages, including a Muslim model walking in a Kornit fabric gown with matching hijab.

With these amazing releases, we can expect to see more of Oliver Tolentino on the red carpet.
