Metro Manila mayors will meet over the weekend to discuss the resumption of the number coding scheme in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos said Tuesday, Nov. 23, that a modified number coding scheme will be released by the Metro Manila Council, which is composed of 17 mayors, probably by Monday next week after their meeting on Saturday.
This came as the current volume of traffic in the NCR has almost returned to pre-pandemic level at around 390,000 vehicles plying on EDSA alone everyday.
According to Abalos, MMDA will first suggest to the mayors to implement the number coding scheme in the region only during the afternoon rush hour, which is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"Baka pe-pwedeng dito muna sa hapon, sapagkat dito sa hapon ang mga tao ay maaaring tumambay muna sa mall or doon muna sa trabaho (Perhaps we can implement it in the afternoon because people can still go to malls or stay at their office until the coding scheme is lifted)," Abalos said in a DZRH interview.
"Bakit hindi umaga? Kasi ang problema sa umaga, nagmamadali 'yung mga tao pumasok, yun bang naghahabol ka (Why not morning? Because the problem is more people are in a rush in the morning)," he added.
But Abalos clarified that if they see it necessary to also implement the color coding scheme in the morning, then they will do it after one to two weeks of observation.
