Grammy-nominated K-pop superstars BTS won Artist of the Year, the highest honor, and two more awards at the 2021 American Music Awards (AMAs) held on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. EST/PST (Nov. 22 in the Philippines) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Besides bagging the Artist of the Year, BTS also won Favorite Pop Duo or Group and Favorite Pop Song for “Butter” at the 2021 AMAs.
For Artist of the Year, BTS won over Ariana Grande, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. This is their first time to win the award.
For the Favorite Pop Duo or Group award, BTS edged out AJR, Glass Animals, Maroon 5 and Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak). This is the third time for BTS to bag the award, winning their first in 2018 and the second last year.
It is the first time for BTS to win Favorite Pop Song. Other nominees in the category were Doja Cat ft. SZA’a “Kiss Me More,” Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” and The Weeknd & Ariana Grande’s “Save Your Tears (Remix).”
This is the fourth straight year that BTS won at the AMAs. In 2018, they won Favorite Social Artist and Favorite Duo or Group-Pop/Rock.
In 2019, they bagged Favorite Social Artist and Tour of the Year, and in 2020, they grabbed Favorite Social Artist and Favorite Duo or Group-Pop/Rock.
In total, they have won nine awards at the AMAs since 2018.
“Nominees are based on key fan interactions – as reflected on the Billboard charts – including streaming, album sales, song sales and radio airplay. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data, and cover the time period September 25, 2020, through September 23, 2021. The American Music Awards winners are voted entirely by fans,” according to MRC.
