President Duterte assured members of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-LABAN) that he will not abandon the ruling party, saying his decision to run under a different party is a strategic political move.

Duterte made the statement days after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) to run for senator in the 2022 elections under Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS).
In his speech in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro on Thursday, November 18, the President said he remains a member of PDP-LABAN.
"I will not abandon the party, whose members helped me in my program of governance. I appreciate the loyalty and support of my partymates and will not waver in my commitment to them," he said.
"I will continue to serve and be of service to PDP-LABAN in my capacity as Chairman and as member of the Council of Elders," he added.
According to the President, he is aware that some of the party's members are wondering why he is running under PDDS, an allied political party of PDP-LABAN.
"It can be summed up in two words, political strategy," he said.
"Our Party can enter into alliances with other political parties to strengthen our chances of achieving victory in the 2022 National and Local Elections. The decision to use the CONA of PDDS is a strategic decision, which in due time will unfold on its own," he added.
Duterte explained that the decision to run under PDDS was due to the legal leadership dispute in PDP-LABAN between the factions of Senator Koko Pimentel and Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
"If by unfortunate chance matalo tayo (we lose), we will be left hanging. It is a quarrel which we do not want," he said, referring to the Cusi faction.
"Kung matalo tayo at least may legal standing tayo kasi (In case we lose, at least we have a legal standing because) we are also in alliance with a political party which is recognized by the COMELEC (Commission on Elections)," he added.
Despite this, President Duterte said he will campaign for all members of PDP-LABAN.
"I will campaign as a PDP-LABAN member and will do the same for our local candidates who have remained loyal to the party and its principles," he said.
"I assure the members of the PDP Laban and PDDS are one. We campaign as one and we will work as one," he added.
