The DepEd Central Office, through the newly created Child Rights in Education Desk under the Office of the Undersecretary for Legal Affairs, will spearhead the two-day event.

With theme, “Batang May K: Karapatan ng Bata sa Edukasyon, Katuwang ang Lahat sa Pagsulong!” this year’s national summit will be held virtually on Nov. 25 to 26.

To help the participants prepare and gather their suggestions regarding the conduct of the summit, DepEd will conduct the Pre-Summit Conference with child participants before the two-day event.

In an invitation letter sent to the Manila Bulletin, DepEd Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Josephine Maribojoc said that the third summit aims to “reinforce the continuing commitment” of the DepEd and various stakeholders in upholding children’s rights in education in normal times and during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Maribojoc added that the national summit also aims to “build on the gains” of the Second National Summit on the Rights of the Child in Education held in November 2020.

Likewise, the summit also aims to introduce the rights-based education (RBE) framework of DepEd and the newly created Child Rights in Education Desk (CREDe).

Maribojoc explained that will provide a “ground-breaking and seminal opportunity” to introduce the RBE framework of DepEd in relation to the initiatives and efforts of the DepEd on child rights including the work of CREDe, distance and limited face-to-face education during the COVID-19 pandemic, and opportunities and points for collaboration among stakeholders of child rights in education.

“The Third National Summit seeks to facilitate discussions and elicit recommendations on upholding RBE in normal times and during the COVID-19 pandemic through a whole-of-school, whole-of-DepEd, whole-of-government, and whole-of-society approach,” Maribojoc said.

“It is also a venue to ensure the participation of children in shaping policies and actions pertaining to RBE in normal times and during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she added.

Due to the ongoing health situation in the country, Maribojoc explained next week’s summit will again be conducted virtually within the Zoom platform.

Different officials and personnel from the DepEd national and local offices and public schools, and representatives from private schools, national government agencies, local government units (LGUs), civil society, international organizations, the academe, business community, and the media are expected to attend.

“More importantly, learners themselves and their parents, guardians, and caregivers will also participate,” Maribojoc said.

The Third National Summit on the Rights of the Child in Education is also part of DepEd’s activities in celebration of the 29th National Children’s Month (NCM) this November.
