PH Red Cross reiterates blood donation a 'humanitarian act'; discourages getting paid for it

As the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to urge the public to donate blood, the humanitarian organization said in a statement on Monday, November 1 that it does not condone giving payments for the act.

PRC reiterated this after it mentioned Republic Act No. 7719, known as the National Blood Services Act of 1994, wherein the Department of Health (DOH) stated that it promotes voluntary blood donation to provide a sufficient supply of safe blood and to regulate blood banks.

PRC added that this act aims to inculcate public awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act.

As the active ally of the government providing 50 percent of the blood needs in the country, the PRC continues to advocate the importance of blood donation in saving the lives of millions of Filipinos.

"Dahil hindi tumitigil ang pangangailangan ng dugo, hinihikayat ko kayong lahat, lalo na ang mga kabataan na magdonate ng dugo every three months. Ugaliin na natin ito (Due to the fact that the need for blood does not cease, we encourage everyone especially those who are young to donate blood every three months. Let's make this a habit),” PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Richard Gordon said.
