Garcia rules PH chess championships semifinal leg

International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia bested his strong counterparts to rule the 2021 Philippine National Chess Championships semifinal leg held online recently.

Garcia, who played for the national team in the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, split the point with IM Daniel Quizon in the eighth and final round to finish with eight points on seven wins and two draws in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

He dominated the first five rounds at the expense of Father Vic Arellano, Joseph Lawrence Rivera, Irwin Aton, IM John Marvin Miciano and Virgen Gil Ruaya before agreeing to a draw with IM Michael Concio Jr. in the sixth.

He edged Romeo Canino in the seventh round, then drew with Quizon for the win.

Concio, meanwhile, finished with 7.5 points for second place, while IMs Ricardo de Guzman and Ronald Dableo came in third and fourth with identical 7 points. Quizon finished fifth with 6.5 points.

The top 5 players advanced to the Grand Finals slated on Dec. 9 to 15 at the Solea Hotel and Resorts in Cordova, Cebu.
