Comelec condemns killing of election officer in Northern Samar

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has condemned the killing of an election officer in Northern Samar province and urged authorities to immediately apprehend the individuals who were behind the crime.

"The Comelec condemns the craven killing of Acting Election Officer James Diaz Maghanoy," said Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez in a statement on Friday, Nov. 19.

"The entire Commission calls on the authorities to leave no stone unturned in its probe of the murder of Maghanoy, and to ensure that those responsible are brought swiftly to justice," he added.

Also, the Comelec- Employees’ Union condemned the said crime.

“The Comelec Employees’ Union (Comelec-EU) strongly condemns this yet another killing of an election frontliner,” said Comelec - EU President Mac Ramirez in a statement.

“We demand no less than justice,” he added.

Ramirez also called for better protection for poll workers amid the election preparations.

“ reiterate our call for greater protection for Comelec employees as we go all-out in our preparations for the upcoming national and local elections,” he said.

On Nov. 18, Maghanoy was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while he was on his way home from the Comelec office in Lope de Vega town of Northern Samar.
