PH expert panel: No discussion yet on booster shots for kids aged 12-17

Granting COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for children aged 12 to 17 was not yet discussed, the Vaccine Expert Panel (VEP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said Thursday, Nov. 18.

VEP head Dr. Nina Gloriani said while they have yet to discuss the booster vaccination of kids, the country’s vaccination drive should be intensified.

“Hindi pa po natin pinag-uusapan natin yan. Kailangan pong mai-ramp up muna ang ating primary series of immunization. Kailangan ipaakyat natin yung nakareceive ng first two doses pa lang hindi pa muna ang third dose (We are not discussing that yet. We need to ramp up our primary series of immunization first. We need to increase those who received the first two doses, not the third dose yet),” Gloriani said during the Laging Handa briefing on Thursday.

She said they do not worry about the waning immunity of vaccines among children since they have a good immune response compared to adults.

“Yung sa mga bata hindi po pinag-uusapan yan. Tatapusin muna nila ang two doses. Sa mga bata kasi maganda ang immune response nila mas mataas kaysa sa medyo may edad. Hindi po tayo masyadong nag-woworry sa waning immunity (For children, we are talking about booster shots yet. They have to complete the two doses. Children have a better immune response than adults. We are not that worried about the waning immunity of vaccines among children),” Gloriani said.

The Philippines began the vaccination of all children aged 12 to 17 on Nov. 3.
