4.0-magnitude quake jolts Masbate -- Phivolcs

An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.0 rocked Masbate at around 8:52 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Its epicenter was traced 5 kilometers (km) northwest of Cataingan, Masbate at a depth of 6 km.

Phivolcs said it was felt as a "moderately strong" tremor at Intensity IV in Cataingan and Pio V. Corpuz in Masbate.

Meanwhile, it was weak at Intensity III in Palanas and Placer in Masbate and Tagapul-an in Samar.

It was slightly felt at Intensity II in Almagro, Samar, while it was scarcely perceptible at Intensity I in Bulusan, Sorsogon.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the quake at Intensity II in Masbate City and Intensity I in Catbalogan City and Legazpi City.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it noted that damage to property or aftershocks due to this earthquake is not expected.
