KBL declares support for Duterte's Senate bid; Lakas-CMD backing seen

The Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, a political party formed by the late former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, announced on Tuesday, Nov. 16 it will support the senatorial bid of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte.

This developed as Lakas-CMD president and House Majority Leader Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said he is honored to nominate Duterte for inclusion in the list of senatorial candidates that the party formed by former President Fidel V. Ramos will adopt.

“The KBL will continue to support President Duterte, we will campaign for his senatorial bid and we will appeal to the people to vote for him,” KBL senatorial aspirant lawyer Larry Gadon said.

Gadon, the lone KBL bet for the Senate, said former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos has also declared his support for Duterte as a senatorial candidate.

“Bongbong Marcos fully understands President Duterte’s stand in backing another presidential candidate. He respect’s the president’s stand,” said Gadon, adding that this position was revealed to him during a meeting with Marcos on Monday.

Duterte has filed before the Commission on Election his candidacy for senator as official candidate of PDP-Laban which he chairs.

Gadon said the KBL’s decision to support Duterte’s senatorial bid is the party’s way of thanking the chief executive for “giving Filipinos the leadership they truly deserve” since his election as president in 2016.

Meanwhile, Romualdez said in a statement that the Lakas-CMD is among the major political parties in the country that helped Duterte be elected in 2015.

“Congressmen who are members or affiliated with Lakas-CMD form part of the supermajority coalition in the House of Representatives, which made possible the passage of vital measures included in the President’s legislative agenda,” said Romualdez.

“With President Duterte’s filing of candidacy for senator in 2022 election, it will be my honor, as Lakas-CMD President, to nominate his name for inclusion in the list of senatorial candidates to be adopted by the party,” the Leyte solon disclosed.

According to Romualdez the National Executive Committee of Lakas-CMD is currently formalizing the list of 12 senatorial candidates to be supported by the party in 2022 elections, and will make formal announcement on this the soonest time possible.
