Fariñas comes out of retirement to challenge Manotoc in Ilocos Norte

CALASIAO, Pangasinan — Two prominent clans in Ilocos Norte are about to face-off again, as Fariñas patriarch Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ makes a last-minute comeback.

Fariñas substituted Juner Daniega Jacinto on Monday, November 15, as the gubernatorial candidate under the Partido Para sa Demokrating Reporma.

He arrived at the COMELEC – Ilocos Norte office at 4:56 in the afternoon.

This is the elder Fariñas’s return to the political arena after he made a last-minute withdrawal during the 2019 gubernatorial election against incumbent governor Matthew Manotoc after a treaty was brokered. This left the Marcos scion score a win.

Fariñas stayed true to his vow to come out of retirement if Sandro, son of Bongbong Marcos, would continue pressing against Ria Fariñas in her re-election bid as representative of the first district of Ilocos Norte.

In an earlier interview on October, Fariñas accused the Marcoses of breaking up the united ‘Solid North’, as they themselves are the ones who destroyed the said unity.

With this, the fight is on in other parts of the province between the two warring clans.

Aside from the gubernatorial and 1st district representative races, Fariñas scion Rey Carlos will also run as vice mayor of Laoag City, Rodolfo Christian as provincial board member, and another son Rudys who is also gunning a re-election in Congress through the Probinsyano Ako partylist.
