22 aspirants for natl posts withdraw COCs


Twenty-two aspirants for national posts withdrew their certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the May 2022 polls.

Based on the list of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) they are the following: Manuel de Castro (senator), Raquel Castillo (vice president), Antonio Valdes (president), Bienvenido Lorque (vice president), Marianito Roque (senator), Christopher Cruz (senator), Ricky Formiento (senator), Anna Velasco (president), Lyle Uy (vice president), Ronald dela Rosa (president), Christopher Lawrence Go (vice president), Grepor Belgica (president), Paolo de Andres (senator), Jesus Durian (senator), Catherine Cruz (senator), Orlando de Guzman (president), Paolo Martelino (senator), Loreto Tenolete (senator), Joel Sison (vice president), Mona Liza Visorde (senator), Benedicto Jose (vice president), and Darwin Logronio (senator).

Of the 22 aspirants who withdrew, only 10 have substitutes.

Manuel De Castro was substituted by Joseph Sison, Raquel Castillo by Walden Bello, Antonio Valdes by Antonio Parlade Jr., Lyle Uy by Sara Duterte, Grepor Belgica by Christopher Lawrence Go, Paolo Andres by Guillermo Eleazar, Jesus Durian by Ramon Mitra, Paolo Martelino by Harry Roque, Loreto Tenolete by Joseph Jocson, and Mona Liza Visorde by Rodrigo Duterte.

In a press briefing on Monday, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that the substitutions made will still have to undergo processing.

He explained that the acceptance of COCs of substitute bets are only ministerial.

"We still have to finalize their political party affiliations. It has to undergo the necessary process," said Jimenez.

The period for substitution due to withdrawal of COCs ended on Nov. 15.
