Rains due LPA, ITCZ to prevail over eastern parts of Visayas, Mindanao

Several parts of the country may continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers due to the prevalence of a low pressure area (LPA) and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

The LPA, which is embedded along the ITCZ, was estimated at 615 kilometers east-southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region may experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the combined effects of the LPA and ITCZ.

PAGASA senior weather specialist Chris Perez said the LPA has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical depression but may bring significant rains over Visayas and Mindanao in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Cloudy skies with rains may also prevail over Cagayan and Isabela due to the shear line or tail-end of frontal system.

The ITCZ is a region where winds coming from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, while the shear line is where the northeasterly and easterly winds merge.

However, both weather systems form clouds causing rains.

PAGASA advised those affected by the LPA, ITCZ, and shear line to stay vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides due to light to, at times, heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or "amihan" may bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and Apayao.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, however, will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the ITCZ and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also warned that severe thunderstorm activities may sometimes trigger flash floods or landslides.
