On their journey to Jerusalem, Jesus and his company reach Jericho, an oasis town and a stopover before an uphill journey to the Holy City. Here Jesus cures a blind beggar who is not hindered by his physical handicap and by people’s rebuke in his determination to speak with Jesus. Jesus gives him back his sight — an instantaneous cure! And with this “sight” he follows Jesus on the way. This following of Jesus is not exactly like the invitation Jesus addressed to the disciples at the beginning of his ministry in Galilee. There, the invitation is for them to follow Jesus, to learn from him as he goes around the region of Galilee preaching, healing, and exorcising demons. This time, Jesus journeys to Jerusalem where the prophets of God are persecuted. The invitation is to carry one’s cross, to follow Jesus up to the giving up of life for him.

GOSPEL • LUKE 18:35-43

As Jesus approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God. When they saw this, all the people gave praise to God.
