Lopez emerges best PH finisher in world para chess tilt

Henry Lopez routed Mongolia’s Tserenjav Tumenbayar in the ninth and final round to emerge as the best performing Filipino in the 4th World Chess Championships for People with Disabilities held online Saturday.

The Asian Para Games multiple gold medalist prevailed after 38 moves of a Sicilian Defense to finish with 7 points on five wins and four draws.

Lopez finished tied for ninth with six others but ended up at 15th after the tiebreak. He was 1.5 points behind eventual champion, FIDE Master Sargis Sargissyan of Armenia.

Jasper Rom, meanwhile, lost his last-round match to Polish FM Marcin Molenda in a 75-move duel of a Sicilian Defense to settle for 20th place with 6.5 points.

He had six wins, one draw and one loss.

FM Sander Severino split the point with Spain’s Tatiana Flores Bernholz in 19 moves of an English game to finish with points for 34th place on four wins, one loss and four draws.

Darry Bernardo also finished with 6 points after a ninth-round draw with Poland’s Szymon Kasperczyk in 70 moves of a Sicilian, but settled for 39th place after the tiebreak.

Rodolfo Sarmiento, for his part, also halved the point with North Macedonia’s Janco Gjorgjevski to finish with 5 points for 97th place on four wins, two draws and three losses.

Team PH, meanwhile, emerged third in the team event with 25.5 points as only its top four players got counted for the tally.

They finished behind Poland with 29.5 points and Russia with 28 points.
