Rom keeps title bid alive in world para chess

Jasper Rom kept his title bid alive in the World Chess Championship for People with Disabilities held online Friday after an eighth-round victory over Poland's Szymon Kaspercyzk.

The Asian Para Games gold medalist split the point after a 76-move marathon duel of a Slav game in the penultimate round to improve to 6.5 points at joint eighth, one full point behind of FIDE Master Sargis Sargissyan of Armenia.

Rom needed to win his final round match against another Polish foe in Marcin Molenda for a chance at a medal.

The PH bet earned an extra point from sixth-round rival Zarko Selkovski of Macedonia, whose games were forfeited due to alleged use of computer engine assistance.

Henry Lopez also drew his eighth-round game against Russian Alexander Mulenko after 23 moves of an English Opening to score 6 points on four wins and four draws.

Other Filipino matches saw FM Sander Severino halving the point with Indian FM Krishna Venkata after 63 moves of a Slav duel and Darry Bernardo yielding to Spain’s Lago David Fernandez in 63 moves of a Pirc Defense for identical 5.5 points.

Rodolfo Sarmiento, meanwhile, also agreed to a draw with Cuban Lorenzo Simon Batista for 4.5 points.

The final round is ongoing as of this writing with Team PH also seeking the top spot in the team race.
