Young Azkals, Mendiola clash for last semis berth

The Azkals Development Team and Mendiola FC 1991 dispute the last semifinals berth Saturday, Nov. 13 when they wrap up the group stage of the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite.

ADT and Mendiola, both beaten by Kaya-Iloilo in their initial assignments, square off at 7:30 p.m. for the second spot in Group B and a date with Stallion-Laguna in the semis on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Scenarios favor ADT, which only needs a draw to clinch a semis berth on goal difference while Mendiola must secure the full three points in order to progress.

Things started on the wrong foot for both clubs in the short competition after Kaya beat ADT, 2-0, in the opener last Nov. 7 before rolling past Mendiola, 6-0, three days later.

Jarvey Gayoso, Oliver Bias, Yrick Gallantes, Dennis Chung, Oskari Kekkonen and Sandro Reyes are expected to play big roles as ADT hopes to punch its ticket in the semis regardless if its a draw or a win.

Mendiola is eager to atone for its crushing loss to Kaya after failing to get a shot on target while suffering lapses on the defensive side of the pitch.

Ashley Flores, Hamed Hajimahdi and Aaron Alitche will look to bounce back from that poor showing and equal Mendiola’s semis showing in the previous Copa edition in 2019.
