Lopez, Bernardo stay in contention in world para chess

Henry Lopez posted his second straight victory for a share of 11th place with Darry Bernardo and stayed in contention with two rounds left in the World Chess Championships for People with Disabilities held online Thursday.

Lopez, a double gold medalist at the 2018 Asian Para Games, trounced Ukraine’s Vladyslav Pokotaiev in 28 moves of a Slav game in the seventh round to improve to 5.5 points on four wins and three draws.

Bernardo, for his part, drew with Grandmaster Marcin Tazbir of Poland in 66 moves of a Sicilian to slightly improve to 5.5 points on five wins, one draw and one loss.

Meanwhile, FIDE Master Sander Severino and Jasper Rom trail with identical 5 points at 24th to 46th places after besting their rivals.

Severino survived France’s Georges Vasquez in a marathon 85-move of a Queen’s Pawn Game, while Rom bounced back from a sixth-round loss and edged Ecuador’s Christopher Leonel Garzon Zapatanga after 32 moves of a Sicilian.

Rodolfo Sarmiento, meanwhile, downed Cuba’s Lorenzo Simon Batista to score 4 points but remained at the lower part of the standings.
