DOST: 1,921 participants of WHO Solidarity Trial for Vaccines already received first dose of COVID jabs

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said more than 1,900 participants of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Solidarity Trial for Vaccines in the country have already received their first dose of jabs against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara said the recruitment of participants for the WHO STV is still ongoing.

“As of November 8, 2021, six hospital and community-based sites are already conducting recruitment activities with a total of 1,921 participants vaccinated with first dose,” she told the Manila Bulletin in a Viber message.

Guevara added that 248 participants have already completed the two-dose schedule.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña had disclosed that the three sites that have already recruited and administered the first dose of the study vaccine were the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Lung Center of the Philippines, and the Makati Medical Center (MMC).

He said so far, no adverse effects have been observed in the participants of WHO SVT.

During his weekly report on Friday, Oct. 29, de la Peña said the Solidarity Trials for Vaccines organized by the WHO recruited its first volunteer on Sept. 30.

The Philippines is one of three countries in the world where the Solidarity Trial for Vaccines was launched.

The two other participating countries are Columbia and Mali.

“The Philippines is committed to be one of the initial countries participating in the Solidarity Trial for Vaccines,” de la Peña said.

He said a number of new vaccines using innovative platforms will be included in the trial.
