Bernardo jumps to joint 7th in world para chess tourney

Darry Bernardo jumped for a share of seventh place with a sixth-round victory over Ejaz Husain of Bangladesh in the World Chess Championship for People with Disabilities held online Wednesday.

Bernardo prevailed after 25 moves of a King’s Pawn: Colorado Counter to improve to five points on five wins and one loss in this nine-round tournament.

Bernardo’s feat put him one point behind solo leader Stanislav Babarykin of Russia, who remained unbeaten with six points.

Henry Lopez, meanwhile, trailed with 4.5 points for joint 19th to 42nd places after a 45-move triumph of a Dutch Defense over Venezuela’s Luis Anibal Rodriguez Pirela.

Jasper Rom lost to North Macedonia’s Zarko Selkovski after 42 moves of a Sicilian Defense while FIDE Master Sander Severino yielded to Mongolia’s Dashtseren Ganbat in a 60-move duel of an English Opening to remain with 4 points for a share of 43rd to 70th places.

Rodolfo Sarmiento also fell deeper into the standings after succumbing to France’s Georges Vasquez in 52 moves of a King’s Indian Defense to get stuck with 3 points for joint 98th.
