“Squid Game,” Netflix’s No. 1 global hit Korean series, will be returning for a second season, according to its director.

The show, which has become Netflix’s biggest ever, tells the story of 456 cash-strapped people playing deadly games for a 45.6 billion won ($38 million) prize. It stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung Ho-yeon, Wi Ha-joon, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung.

“Squid Game” director Hwang Dong-hyuk and the cast of the show attended the 2021 Art+Film Gala on Nov. 6 organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in Los Angeles, an event which honored artists Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley, and director Steven Spielberg.

After which, Netflix held a special screening with Hwang Dong-hyuk, Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Jung Ho-yeon at Neuehouse Hollywood in Los Angeles on Nov. 8.

When asked about season 2 of “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “I do have a basic storyline for season two — it’s all in my head — and I am currently in the brainstorming stage. It will happen, someday, but as for when I cannot tell you the details,” The Hollywood Reporter reported.

After the director’s confirmation of season 2, a Netflix spokesperson told THR, “A second season is in discussions, but not confirmed yet.”

According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, “There was a lot of pressure for season two even when I was in Korea, so I have felt that pressure for a long time. We get on YouTube and see people that have already written season two and season three for us.”

He added, “Coming here and really seeing how well-received the show is and how much the fans want it, I have been getting the same question by the press as well.”

For Season 2, he said, “What I can say is that Gi-hun is going to be back, and he will do something for the world.”

Lee Jung-jae is clueless for now about season 2, saying “I don’t even know what’s going to happen.”

Fans want the backstories on Gong Yoo and Lee Byung-hun. Gong Yoo made a special appearance in “Squid Game,” playing the role of the ddakji man, who recruits players to join the deadly games. He plays ddakji, a game of flipping folded papers, with potential contestants and give them calling cards.

Lee Byung-hun is the front man and brother of police officer Hwang Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha-joon).

In a YouTube video uploaded by his agency, Artist Company, Lee Jung-hae said, "While we were filming 'Squid Game,’ we actually asked the director whether he plans to make the second season."

"At that time, he told us, 'I put so much effort into making 'Squid Game'. I pretty much put everything into it, so I don't think it'll be easy for me to stretch this further,'" he said, according to SBS News.

"But we're not in the same situation as then. 'Squid Game' is more loved than any of us had expected that we have to repay them somehow. I think 'Squid Game 2' will be one way to do that. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk. I don't think you have any choice now. You must make the second season of 'Squid Game'!" he added with a laugh.

In a letter to shareholders last October, Netflix announced that “Squid Game” is now its biggest show of all time.

According to Netflix, 142 million household viewers have watched “Squid Game” in its first four weeks since its release on Sept. 17.

“Released on September 17, it has become our biggest TV show ever. A mind-boggling 142m member households globally have chosen to watch the title in its first four weeks,” it said. It ranked No. 1 in 94 countries including the US.
