MMDA installs two new traffic lights on EDSA-Quezon City

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has installed new traffic lights in two U-turn slots on EDSA in Quezon City to improve road safety in one of the country's major highways.

The traffic lights are located in front of Quezon City Academy and near Dario Bridge, where the u-turn slots are located, "to facilitate smooth flow of traffic in the area without interrupting the operations of the EDSA Bus Carousel," MMDA said Wednesday, Nov. 10.

MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos led the ceremonial switching of the traffic lights as he said, the agency is "gearing towards this holiday season."

"Hence, we have installed traffic signal lights on the said areas to improve road safety, pedestrian movement as well as reduced travel time. It is operational 24/7," he said.

With this, Abalos said, the agency will reduce the number of traffic enforcers in the area.

"Currently, we have eight personnel deployed the said areas. We will deploy our personnel to other strategic locations along the major thoroughfares to man the traffic," he said.

MMDA said, only light vehicles are allowed to make a u-turn at EDSA-QC Academy while the u-turn slot near Dario Bridge opens for emergency and government-marked vehicles only, from 6am to 10pm.

The installation of traffic lights at EDSA-QC Academy and Dario Bridge u-turn slots is part of the Phase V-Traffic Signalization Project of the agency's Traffic Engineering Center.
