President Duterte has chosen Lt. Gen. Dionardo Carlos to be the successor of the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar.

A copy of Carlos's signed appointment paper was acquired by Malacañang reporters Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 10.
Carlos, the chief of the directorial staff, is set to take over from Eleazar, who will celebrate on Nov. 13 his 56th birthday, the mandatory retirement age for the PNP chief.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque subsequently confirmed the authenticity of the document in a statement.
"We confirm that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed today, November 10, 2021, the appointment of Dionardo Bernardo Carlos as the new Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), effective November 13, 2021. We are confident that Gen. Carlos will continue making the PNP a professional, capable and reform-oriented organization that we envision it to be," Roque said.
"We wish Gen. Carlos all the best as the new PNP chief," he added.
Carlos will essentially be the last PNP chief of President Duterte, who will step down from Malacañang on June 30, 2022.
He will have big shoes to fill, considering the popularity of Eleazar.
Carlos is the 27th chief of the national police force.
