Two hundred five aspirants for national positions may be declared as nuisance candidates by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

"For the position of president, 82 petitions have been filed, 15 for vice president, and 108 for those running for senator," Comelec - Education and Information Department (EID) Assistant Director Elaiza David said during the Laging Handa forum Wednesday, Nov. 10.
"These are the ones who were filed petitions to declare as nuisance candidates by the Comelec," she added.
David said there's no available ata yet for other positions.
The poll body earlier filed the motu proprio cases for the declaration as nuisance candidates.
Section 69 of the Omnibus Election Code states that the Commission may, motu proprio or upon a verified petition of an interested party, refuse to give due course to or cancel a certificate of candidacy.
This is in cases where it is shown that it is filed to put the election process in mockery or disrepute, or to cause confusion among the voters by the similarity of the names of the registered candidates, or by other circumstances or acts which clearly demonstrate that the candidate has no bona fide intention to run for the office.
The Comelec reported that from Oct. 1 to 8, the number of aspirants in the May 2022 polls who filed for president totaled 97, for vice president 29, and 176 for senator.
Partylist groups that filed certificates of nomination and acceptance (CONA) totaled 270.
